The trade was easy, a stupid TV movie
for my mother’s day
which she wanted to tell me
and I would listen at commercial breaks
until she finally said “I see you’re busy
and don’t want to bother you”
and walked away.

It was inadvertent,
like sleeping in
and hearing her come up the stairs
to my bed and pause and
smile down at me
